G Herbo Soundcheck
One of the best decisions I made while working at Monster Energy was building a relationship with the music marketing department. I’ve always enjoyed all types of music and going to concerts in my free time. I was so grateful to have the opportunity to work with such an amazing music marketing team. They were so welcoming, and they taught me so much.
This partnership opened up so many doors for me when it came to working on different projects and shoots for the company.
One project that I was excited to work on was the Sound Check interview with G Herbo.
Monster Energy sponsors The Outbreak Tour, which is a highly influential national music tour brand that functions as a major "tastemaker" for the music industry. Launched in 2011 by Outbreak Presents, its primary mission is to showcase the biggest emerging artists right as they are on the verge of their culture-shaping, mainstream breakthroughs.
In 2021, they were showcasing G Herbo, a multiplatinum Chicago rapper and two-time Grammy nominee. Herbo came into the studio to shoot an interview that would help promote the tour. The interviews that Monster Energy did are called “Sound Check”.
One thing about these Sound Check interviews is that you get a little more insight into the artist and a peek at what to expect when you see them on the tour.
Cody, the music marketing videographer/editor, came with a vision for the shoot, and I was able to help bring his creative vision to life through production setup and execution. One creative concept Cody brought to the shoot was using a chrome mirror reflective sheet that was used for the backdrop. The colors reflected off of it so nicely, and it was so different from shooting on the cyc wall.
Another creative idea Cody thought of was using a projector and reflecting G Herbo’s name on his face. View the photo below of how that looked.
I had to hold the projector up in place for Cody to get the shot. I don't think the shot was ever used in the video, but I thought it was a really awesome concept.
